Dr. Jae Seon Kim, a prosthodontist based in Seattle, recently shared his approach to handling prosthodontic cases in a comprehensive interview. With a focus on delivering restorations that seamlessly blend into the patient’s smile and function harmoniously, Dr. Kim emphasizes the importance of looking at the big picture rather than getting lost in the details.
One key aspect of Dr. Kim’s approach is patient education and involvement. According to him, educating the patient about their condition and actively involving them in the treatment process is crucial for achieving successful outcomes. When patients understand their conditions and are engaged in the treatment, they tend to appreciate the results even more.
When it comes to selecting materials for different cases, Dr. Kim takes into consideration the unique conditions of each patient. For anterior cases that require a focus on aesthetics, he often chooses glass oxide ceramics with a higher glass content, like IPS e.max. On the other hand, posterior cases require more strength and function, so Dr. Kim prefers aesthetic zirconia with a well-balanced translucency and strength, such as KATANA Zirconia STML. In full-mouth rehabilitation cases with multiple long-span units, zirconia, either in monolithic or layered form, is his material of choice.
Dr. Kim also discussed his strategy for cementation. With advancements in adhesive dentistry, many materials now provide strong and stable bonds to enamel, dentin, and prosthetic surfaces. Dr. Kim relies on PANAVIA family products with the original MDP technology for cementation. For anterior cases, he prefers PANAVIA V5, which offers excellent color stability and adhesive strength. For posterior cases involving zirconia restorations, he relies on PANAVIA SA Cement Universal and CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick, allowing him to bond directly to zirconia without the need for a separate primer.
In summary, Dr. Jae Seon Kim’s approach to prosthodontic cases involves considering the big picture, educating and involving the patient, and selecting materials and cementation techniques based on the individual patient’s needs. By focusing on aesthetics, function, and patient satisfaction, Dr. Kim strives to deliver restorations that seamlessly blend into the patient’s smile and improve their overall oral health.
