Former TV personality Dr Ranj Singh has spoken out about the negative impact of the culture at This Morning on people’s mental health. The popular ITV daytime program faced challenges this year with the departure of presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby. Dr Ranj, who left the show in 2021, revealed that the culture had become toxic. However, ITV’s chief executive, Dame Carolyn McCall, has dismissed claims of a toxic culture on the show in the past.
The show experienced turmoil earlier this year when Schofield left amid reports of a rift with Willoughby. He later admitted to having an affair with a younger colleague. Willoughby briefly returned to the show but ultimately decided to leave in October, leading to a rotation of guest presenters hosting This Morning.
During the public scandal surrounding Schofield’s affair, former staff members, including Dr Ranj, expressed concerns about a toxic work environment on the show. In a BBC iPlayer documentary on impostor syndrome, Dr Ranj spoke about his deep investment in This Morning and the negative culture that had developed, affecting people’s mental well-being.
Dr Ranj revealed instances of feeling bullied during his time on the show and believed it was his responsibility as a mental health and anti-bullying ambassador to speak up about the mistreatment. He also mentioned that he hadn’t been in contact with Schofield and Willoughby for a long time and didn’t have that kind of relationship with them.
ITV has been approached for comment regarding Dr Ranj’s recent remarks. Dame Carolyn McCall previously stated that the claims of a toxic workplace were not recognized by the network and emphasized that the majority of staff on the show are highly engaged and motivated. An internal investigation was conducted when Dr Ranj initially raised concerns, but no evidence was found to support his claims.
In other news, there has been speculation about the permanent replacements for Schofield and Willoughby on This Morning. The Sun newspaper reported that Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley are rumored to be the replacements, but ITV has called this speculation and has not confirmed any official appointments.
