Trust Links, a mental health charity based in Southend-on-Sea, has received high praise from a teenager with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for the invaluable support they have provided. Matthew, a 17-year-old who struggles with ADHD, described Trust Links as a “second family” and expressed his gratitude for their assistance. Thanks to a generous donation of £99,735 from BBC Children in Need, Trust Links will now be able to extend their aid to approximately 4,000 children and young people every year.
The CEO of Trust Links, Matt King, highlighted the vital role the charity plays in rebuilding lives, especially considering the significant increase in referrals during the challenging times of the pandemic. Trust Links has implemented various projects, one of which is called “therapeutic gardening.” This initiative involves involving young individuals in the process of growing and cooking their own vegetables. To facilitate this, Trust Links operates community gardens and allotments in different locations across south Essex. In addition to the therapeutic aspect, the charity also offers wellbeing workshops and social events.
Matthew shared his personal experience, expressing how being a part of Trust Links has allowed him to embrace his true self and find a sense of belonging that he struggled to experience at school. The charity’s inclusive and supportive environment has been pivotal in helping him feel comfortable being himself.
With BBC Children in Need Day fast approaching, individuals are encouraged to get involved and donate to support charitable causes. Trust Links serves as an excellent example of the positive impact that such donations can have on the lives of young people facing mental health challenges. The substantial donation from BBC Children in Need will enable Trust Links to continue their valuable work and reach even more individuals in need of support.
Trust Links’ success in providing assistance to children and young people demonstrates the importance of accessible mental health services in the community. The charity’s dedication to creating a safe and nurturing environment has been recognized and celebrated by those who have benefitted from their support. As the organization continues to grow and expand its reach, the impact on the lives of young people like Matthew is likely to be immeasurable.
