The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has revealed that there has been a significant increase in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in the United States. According to their research, there were 26.2 million surgical and minimally invasive procedures performed in 2022, marking a 19% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019.
The top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2022 were liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, breast lift, and eyelid surgery. Additionally, breast reduction procedures saw a surge of 54% since 2019. In terms of minimally invasive procedures, neuromodulator injections, hyaluronic acid fillers, skin resurfacing, skin treatment with combination lasers, and lip augmentation with injectable materials were the most popular choices. Among reconstructive procedures, tumor removal, hand surgery, breast reconstruction, maxillofacial procedures, and scar revision were the top choices.
One of the factors contributing to the increase in procedures is the post-pandemic period, where patients are no longer delaying their desired treatments. The flexibility of hybrid work schedules and more time spent working from home have allowed for easier recovery, making it convenient for patients to undergo procedures. The face and neck have taken center stage, with eyelid surgeries, facelifts, and cheek implants witnessing significant increases. Body-centric procedures like liposuction and noninvasive fat reduction have also seen a rise, likely due to weight fluctuations during the pandemic.
The influence of social media has played a significant role in shaping plastic surgery trends and perception. Patients have become more transparent in sharing their plastic surgery journeys on platforms like Instagram, leading to an increase in certain procedures. Lip augmentation with fillers and buccal fat removal procedures have gained popularity as a result. The rise of social media has helped destigmatize plastic surgery, allowing patients to openly discuss their experiences and interests in various procedures.
The collaboration between ASPS, CosmetAssure, and PatientNow has provided comprehensive and reliable data on cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. This annual report, published since 1992, aims to offer the most accurate statistical trends in the field of plastic surgery. By utilizing data from member surgeons and affiliated companies, the report strengthens its credibility and serves as a valuable resource for doctors, patients, researchers, and the media.
Overall, the ASPS 2022 procedural research highlights the growing interest in plastic surgery among the public, with patients seeking to enhance their appearance and improve their self-confidence. The organization remains committed to upholding safety standards and prioritizing patient and provider education as the demand for plastic surgery continues to rise.
