The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has revealed the latest findings from their 2022 procedural research, shedding light on the increasing demand for both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in the United States. The data indicates a notable 19% surge in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019.
Among the top cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2022, liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, breast lift, and eyelid surgery took the lead. Interestingly, breast reduction procedures experienced a significant spike of 54% compared to 2019. In terms of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, the top five included neuromodulator injections, hyaluronic acid fillers, skin resurfacing, skin treatment with combination lasers, and lip augmentation with injectable materials.
Regarding reconstructive procedures, the most common ones comprised tumor removal, hand surgery, breast reconstruction, maxillofacial procedures, and scar revision. Notably, the impact of the ongoing pandemic has played a significant role in the number of procedures performed, as patients are now opting to pursue treatments they may have previously postponed.
There has been a growing emphasis on facial and neck procedures, with a surge in eyelid surgeries and an 8% increase in facelift procedures. The use of masks during the pandemic has shifted the focus to the eyes, making them the central feature of the face and contributing to this trend. Additionally, there has been a rise in facelift procedures and a staggering 150% increase in cheek implants.
Body-centric procedures have also remained popular, with liposuction witnessing a 23% rise and noninvasive fat reduction procedures experiencing a remarkable 77% surge compared to 2019. Breast augmentation and lifts have also maintained their prominence, with a 30% increase in breast lifts since the start of the pandemic. Interestingly, there has been a notable upswing in the demand for cosmetic breast reductions, indicating that individuals prioritize both comfort and aesthetics.
The influence of social media has undeniably played a significant role in shaping trends and perceptions within the field of plastic surgery. Patients have become more inclined to share their personal plastic surgery journeys, leading to an increase in certain procedures. Lip augmentation with fillers and buccal fat removal procedures have witnessed a rise in popularity. As individuals share their experiences and interests on various social media platforms, plastic surgery has become less stigmatized.
The ASPS Annual Procedural Statistics have served as a reliable source of information on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery trends in the United States since 1992. The data for 2022 was meticulously collected from member surgeons and affiliated companies, CosmetAssure and PatientNow, ensuring a comprehensive report that holds credibility and value for medical professionals, patients, researchers, and the media alike.
As the demand for plastic surgery continues to grow, the ASPS remains dedicated to upholding stringent safety standards and prioritizing patient and provider education.
