The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has recently unveiled the findings of its 2022 procedural research, shedding light on the number of surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic and reconstructive procedures performed in the United States last year. Astonishingly, the data shows a significant 19% surge in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019, with a total of 26.2 million procedures carried out.

Among the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2022, liposuction claimed the lead, followed closely by breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (commonly known as a tummy tuck), breast lift, and eyelid surgery. Notably, breast reduction procedures also experienced a considerable upswing, indicating a shifting trend in aesthetic preferences.

In the realm of minimally invasive procedures, neuromodulator injections, such as Botox, emerged as the most popular, followed by hyaluronic acid fillers, skin resurfacing treatments, skin treatment with combination lasers, and lip augmentation using injectable materials. These non-invasive techniques have gained immense popularity due to their ability to enhance appearance with minimal downtime.

On the reconstructive front, the most common procedures included tumor removal, hand surgery, breast reconstruction, maxillofacial surgery, and scar revision. These procedures are vital in restoring both form and function to individuals who have undergone trauma, illness, or disease.

The rise in plastic surgery procedures can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, there is an increasing desire among individuals to improve their appearance, boost self-confidence, and enhance their overall quality of life. Secondly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has led many people to reevaluate their priorities and seek transformative changes. Additionally, the influence of social media cannot be underestimated, as it plays a significant role in shaping trends and shaping perceptions of beauty.

Despite the surge in plastic surgery procedures, the ASPS remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding safety standards and prioritizing patient and provider education. The society recognizes the importance of ensuring that individuals are well-informed about the risks, benefits, and realistic expectations associated with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

In conclusion, the ASPS’s 2022 procedural research highlights a remarkable increase in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in the United States. The data underscores the growing interest in plastic surgery, driven by various factors such as the desire for aesthetic improvement, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the influence of social media. As the demand for these procedures continues to rise, it is crucial for the ASPS and healthcare professionals to prioritize safety, education, and ethical practices to ensure the well-being of patients.
