Laurence Busse, MD, MBA, has emerged as a remarkable figure in the medical field, but his journey to becoming a doctor was anything but conventional. In 1990, Busse experienced a life-altering moment that would shape his future. While driving with friends in New Orleans, he was involved in a devastating car crash that tragically claimed the lives of his companions and left him with severe burns covering 85 percent of his body.
The road to recovery was long and arduous, but Busse’s determination to survive was unwavering. Under the care of plastic surgeon Thomas Crais, MD, he endured a three-month hospital stay and underwent numerous painful surgeries. Despite the grim prognosis, Busse’s indomitable spirit pushed him to not only survive but also thrive.
After his recovery, Busse was driven to complete his college degree. Returning to Tulane University just one year after the accident, he later pursued an MBA at Emory University in Atlanta. While working as a business consultant in the corporate finance department of major accounting firms, Busse’s passion for medicine persisted. Influenced by his parents, who were both involved in the medical field, he decided to take pre-med classes and ultimately earned his MD, specializing in critical care.
However, it was Busse’s time as a patient in the ICU that truly shaped his perspective as a medical provider. Having experienced firsthand the vulnerability and uncertainty of being critically ill, he was inspired to merge his medical and business skills. Currently, Busse holds the positions of medical director for critical care at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and site director of the Emory Critical Care Center. Additionally, he oversees the Satellite Trails Group of Emory, which combines his expertise in business and medicine through clinical trials.
Busse’s incredible journey serves as a testament to resilience and the power of perseverance. He believes that life is fragile and fleeting, urging others to seize the moment and pursue their passions. Through sharing his story, Busse hopes to inspire individuals to overcome their own challenges and discover their true calling in life.
In a world where adversity often threatens to overshadow dreams, Laurence Busse, MD, MBA, stands as a shining example of triumph over tragedy. His unwavering determination, combined with his unique blend of medical and business expertise, has allowed him to make a profound impact in the field of medicine.
