The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has just released its 2022 procedural research results, and the findings reveal a significant rise in the number of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures performed in the United States. Collaborating with partners CosmetAssure and PatientNow, the ASPS collected data that shows a staggering 26.2 million surgical and minimally invasive procedures were carried out in 2022 alone, marking a 19% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures since 2019.
Among the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2022, liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, breast lift, and eyelid surgery took the lead. Notably, breast reduction procedures also experienced a surge in popularity. As for minimally invasive procedures, neuromodulator injections and hyaluronic acid fillers were the most sought-after treatments. Furthermore, facelift procedures and cheek implants witnessed an upward trend.
The post-pandemic era has seen a remarkable surge in the number of procedures performed, indicating that patients are no longer delaying the treatments they have been contemplating. The flexibility of hybrid work schedules and increased time spent working from home have contributed to this trend.
The face and neck have become the focal point of many patients’ aesthetic enhancements. The use of masks during the pandemic brought attention to the eyes, resulting in an increase in eyelid surgeries. Additionally, there was an 8% rise in facelift procedures and an astonishing 150% increase in cheek implants.
Body-centric procedures have maintained their prominence, with liposuction and noninvasive fat reduction procedures experiencing significant growth compared to 2019. Breast augmentation, breast lifts, and breast reductions have also remained popular procedures, indicating a trend that values both comfort and aesthetics.
Social media has played a significant role in influencing plastic surgery trends and shaping public perception. Patients have become more transparent about sharing their plastic surgery journeys on platforms like Instagram, which has contributed to the increase in certain procedures. Lip augmentation with fillers and buccal fat removal procedures have become sought-after treatments.
The ASPS Annual Procedural Statistics, which have been collected since 1992, provide reliable data on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery trends in the United States. The collaboration between ASPS, CosmetAssure, and PatientNow strengthens the credibility of the data and ensures its accuracy.
Overall, the rise in the number of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures reflects the growing desire among the public to enhance their appearance. ASPS member surgeons remain committed to upholding safety standards and prioritizing patient and provider education.
